Following his earlier work Humanity Under Totalitarianism: Concentration Camps and Dystopias in Literature, Professor Xu Ben widens his lens from the concentration camp itself to the societies that produced them: Nazi Germany and Stalinist Soviet Union. By analyzing the witness narratives of people who lived through these two totalitarian states, he reveals that those who led "normal lives" under totalitarianism inhabited a world of psychological complexity and shifting external circumstances far more layered than we might assume. The book offers a richer, more three-dimensional understanding of this dark chapter in history — helping us recognize the conditions that allow totalitarianism to take root, guard against its emergence, and, should it ever arrive, know how to find one's footing as an individual.
